The short film Anuja has arrived on Netflix. The touching story follows 9-year-old Anuja, played by Sajda Pathan, who works with her sister Palak (Ananya Shanbhag) in a garment factory in Delhi, India. When the bright Anuja is faced with a life-changing choice, the future of her family rests on her shoulders.
Anuja was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards. Directed by Adam J. Graves and producer Suchitra Mattai also won the award for best live-action short film When Anuja premiered last August at the HollyShorts Film Festival. To bring the sisters’ compelling story to the screen, the filmmakers worked with the nonprofit Salaam Baalak Trust, which supports Yorking children in India, and Shine Global, as well as NGOs such as the Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation and Save the Children.
“Anuja is a heartfelt tribute to the resilience and untold stories of working children, highlighting their joy and hope in the midst of hardship. The film captures the innocence and magic of childhood,” Graves said. “We are grateful to our producers and Netflix for giving this important story a global platform, connecting audiences around the world with the strength of these remarkable children.”
The director is joined by producers Mindy Kaling (Never Have I Ever) and Guneet Monga Kapoor (Oscar-winning documentary short The Elephant Whisperers) as well as executive producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas in their desire to bring the live-action short film to audiences worldwide. “Anuja is a story that means a lot to me. It’s powerful, hopeful, and full of life, just like the incredible young women it represents,” Kaling said. “The film brings attention to critical issues while celebrating resilience, humor, and hope. I’m thrilled that Netflix is joining the team, expanding the conversation, and reaching a wider audience.”
