Bikini Killer Charles Sobhraj Story

Charles Sobhraj, infamously known as the “Bikini Killer” and “The Serpent,” was a notorious criminal whose reign of terror spanned the 1970s and 1980s. Born in Saigon in 1944 to a Vietnamese mother and an Indian father, Sobhraj’s early life was marked by petty crimes, which evolved into a more sinister pattern of violence. He preyed on Western backpackers travelling the “hippie trail” through Southeast Asia, using his charm and good looks to lure victims.

Once he gained their trust, he would drug them and subsequently kill them, often leaving their bodies in gruesome states—such as the women found in bikinis on Thai beaches—which earned him the moniker “Bikini Killer.” His criminal activities included stealing passports, which he used for illicit purposes such as drug and gemstone trafficking, further complicating his criminal profile.

Charles-sobhraj-real-story

Sobhraj’s criminal career was marked by a series of dramatic arrests, escapes, and international pursuits. In 1970, he was arrested in India for a jewellery heist but fled while on bail. He continued his criminal activities across Europe and Asia, evading capture through a combination of cunning and bribery. In 1976, he was arrested in India but managed a daring escape from the high-security Tihar jail in 1986 by drugging the guards. His elusiveness earned him the nickname “The Serpent.”

Despite his continued efforts to evade justice, Sobhraj was ultimately caught in Nepal in 2003 for the murder of American backpacker Connie Jo Bronzich. Convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, he married a Nepali woman while in prison. Despite his attempts to escape justice, he was released on health grounds in December 2022. Sobhraj’s complex and chilling criminal career remains a significant and unsettling chapter in the annals of international crime.
